Chapter 25 – Xander

“Blackhammer89, you’ve got unfriendlies on your six,” I said into the headset.

“Roger that MindFreak,” came the reply.

I fired on the enemies with my virtual gun, bullets sprayed and bodies fell in their wake. The picture flickered on my screen.

“What the fuck?” I hit the side of it with my hand. That had never happened before.

The picture steadied. I kept on blazing through enemy lines. We had to secure the package before it was airlifted off the island.

The picture flickered again. Right before a loud electrical pop sounded through my headset. The lights went out as the fire alarms went off.

“What the fuck is happening?” I shot through our mental network as I threw off the headset. I started counting down the seconds until the backup generator turned on..

Ten.

Nine.

I grabbed the right keyboard, my fingers flying over the keys to do a system check.

We were completely black.

Seven.

“Xander, if you’ve blown another breaker, I’m beating your ass,” Asher said through the implant.

“It wasn’t me.”

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

Lights came back on. My computers began automatic reboot settings.

Atlas, Taryk, Asher, and Lukas came rushing into my rooms.

“What the fuck, Xan?” Taryk asked, his cell phone in his hand. The small device lit up his face. “It’s saying we had a power surge. The whole block is down.”

I shook my head. “I’ve got no clue. I was just playing my game.” I tipped my chin at my usual console. A thin stream of smoke rose from the casing.

“Someone’s gonna fucking die,” I muttered. It had taken me almost a year to get to the last level.

“We can worry about your virtual life after we’ve made sure your real life isn’t in danger. Where are Ransom, Saint, and Kiema?” Taryk asked.

I snorted. “Really? Was that an actual question?” I lifted a finger, pointed it at the ceiling. “I’m surprised you didn’t hear any of their caterwauling.”

“Oh, believe me, I did. I just thought they’d be down here already.” We all looked at each other.

“Fuck.”

“Shit.”

“Hell.”

“What’s the problem again, gov?” Lukas asked.

We pushed past him, moving towards the elevator. I stabbed the button for Saint’s fifth floor level.

The silence and tension were making the skin on my neck raise and tremble.

She’s got to be okay. As much as it would hurt to lose the guys, she has to live. I couldn’t live without her.

The slowest two floor elevator ride of my life finally came to an end. We pushed through the freight doors and slammed our way into Saint’s home.

The three of them were entwined on the bed. Naked legs, arms, torsos, boobs, and dicks were on display.

Atlas moved forward.

“Careful, now,” Taryk called.

Atlas didn’t stop moving for even a second. He rested his knee on the bed, leaned forward. Felt for Kiema’s pulse on her wrist. I held my breath. He kept count on his watch. His brow furrowed.

“What? What’s wrong with her?” I pushed through the wall of Taryk and Asher.

“Easy, Xan. Easy,” Taryk cautioned.

I pushed by him. I had to get to her.

“She’s fine, Xander. Her heart rate is extremely slow though.
